Four steps, whichever platform you used
- Add the domain in the platform first. Enter both
yourdomain.comandwww.yourdomain.com. Most platforms will not accept the connection until the domain is listed on their side, and one without the other leaves half your visitors on a broken address. - Copy the records it shows into your Big Domain DNS panel. The types vary — A, CNAME, ALIAS or TXT — and the values are per project, so use the ones on your screen rather than the numbers in an older tutorial.
- Leave your nameservers where they are. That is what keeps your Big Domain email working. Reference records for custom domain setups are below.
- Wait, then check HTTPS. Propagation is usually 5–15 minutes and can take hours. Once the platform sees the records it issues the SSL certificate for you — nothing to buy, nothing to renew by hand.

Use the row that matches where your app runs. A register or CNAME at the apex is not valid DNS — use an A record, or ALIAS / ANAME / flattening where available.

Four things that break the connection
1. Changing your nameservers silently kills your email. This is the one that catches people out. Adding an A, CNAME or TXT record does not touch your MX records, so mail keeps arriving. Moving the domain to the platform's own nameservers does — and then you have to recreate every MX and TXT record there first. Unless you want the platform running all of your DNS, leave the nameservers alone.
2. A Cloudflare orange cloud blocks verification. If your DNS sits behind Cloudflare's proxy, set the records to DNS only (grey cloud) while you connect the domain. A proxied record usually cannot be validated and the domain simply refuses to confirm. Railway is the exception — its instructions ask for the proxy on and SSL mode set to Full, not Full (Strict).
3. Verification TXT records are permanent. Replit, Railway, Firebase, Lovable and GitHub Pages all issue certificates off a TXT record. Delete it after the domain goes live and the next renewal fails quietly — the site then starts serving an expired certificate weeks later. Treat that TXT row as permanent.
4. AAAA records and apex CNAMEs. Render, Firebase, Lovable and Replit all ask you to remove IPv6 (AAAA) records, and a plain CNAME is not valid at the root of a domain. At the apex use an A record, or ALIAS / ANAME / CNAME flattening if your provider supports it.
